The legendary island of Ibiza is cosmopolitan, multicultural and bursting with a whole host of activities for young and old, for city dwellers and hikers, for those with a thirst for culture and clubbers from all walks of life. Whether you go with family, friends, alone or with your partner, there are a huge number of great activities and perfect spots to guarantee a truly unforgettable holiday in Ibiza.
So, without further ado...
Ibiza town, the island capital, is brimming with entertainment and great for partying. All along Carrer Barcelona, a vibrant strip of bars, cafes, nightclubs and nocturnal processions, you can expect to find every kind of extravagance. Everyone is encouraged to dress as they please in Ibiza town and nothing is too original. Dalt Vila, the upper part of the city, is characterised by its citadel, which includes the old quarter's main monuments and ancient ruins.
Very much a meeting point for the marine jet set, who gather around the nautical port and luxury shops, Santa Eulalia boasts a rich architectural heritage (Romanesque bridge, a fortress, church...), while the panoramic view of Cala Llonga bay, the pretty villages of San Carlos, Jesus and Santa Gertrudis and the beach of Es Canar, not to mention the only 18-hole golf course on the island, leave visitors with plenty of memories to sift through long after they leave .
This former fishing village, located in a bay facing the island of Sa Conillera, offers tranquillity during the day and a party atmosphere at night. The town itself, bordering Sant Antonio bay, is something of a seaside resort, drawing tourists who want to make the most of its clubs and party scene. However, venture a little further outside and it is blessed with some gorgeous wild beaches and charming landscapes. Particularly charming little corners include Cala Salada, a little further north of the town, and the prehistoric cave of Ses Fontanelles.
Found within this vibrant village near Talamanca, the altarpiece of the Renaissance Gothic church (designed by Rodrigo d'Osona el Joven of the Valencia School) is considered very much the jewel of the island of Ibiza. This spot is a favourite among travellers, owing to its wide selection of restaurants and bars, such as Bon Lloc and El Deseo. In addition, just minutes from the village, off the beaten track, you will find a beautiful, secluded cove with crystal clear waters.
A special archaeological site of the Balearic Islands, which has been recognised by UNESCO and declared "Patrimony of Humanity", the ruins found at the Punic Necropolis of Puig des Molins are a reminder of the Phoenician colonisation of the Pityusic Islands (Ibiza ad Formentera, among others).
On the North-East coast of the island, this port is the venue for a number of famous summer concerts as well as a the colourful stalls of its hippy market. It has a wide, white sandy beach nestled in a creek and protected by rugged, tree-topped cliffs. Nearby you can visit the ancient site of the Can Marça caves.
This traditional village in Western Ibiza is absolutely delightful and its surrounding beaches and coves are both numerous and beautiful, with shallow waters and a laid-back vibe making the destination ideal for the family.
Very much the island's hippy centre, this rural village is centred on a healthy, spiritual lifestyle. Characterised by an 18th century whitewashed church, the rest of the village possesses a strong Spanish air with stone houses and sloping roofs, while the surrounding forests and idyllic beaches provide a wonderfully relaxing backdrop.
Water sports are well worth trying (sailing, kitesurfing, diving, snorkelling...) with more than 80 sites throughout the island, alongside a great many hikes and bike rides, as well as horseback riding for all levels. Also, a golf course in Santa Eulalia will delight those looking to play a leisurely 18 holes. For something a little more adrenalin-inducing, you can fly in the air during a paragliding or parasailing session.
The island is also renowned for its gastronomy, in which the products are fresh and local and fish is king. Be sure to try the island's traditional recipes of the island as well as the more contemporary, gourmet dishes that grace the tables of the island's countless chic restaurants.
A nice meal typically consists of tapas, such as local olives, good bread, a portion of fried octopus and aioli, before the arrival of the main dish - perhaps peasant pottage "sofrit pagès", fried pork “frita de cerdo", fish stew "guisat de peix" or fish stew and rice "bullit de peix and arroz a banda”. This is, of course, washed down with a glass of wine or two and followed by a dessert of flao (the famous fresh cheese and mint tart) and capped off with a "caleta", a special coffee infused with cinnamon, orange and lemon and more than a splash of brandy and rum.
