5 Towns and Villages on the Costa Brava

Spain has many beaches, the Costa Brava is the region along the Mediterranean Sea and its coastline stretches for over 120 kilometres. Located in Catalonia, it is a favourite destination for holidaymakers. The towns and villages along the coast are full of charm and offer a variety of landscapes. Here are some of the villages on the Costa Brava that will make your stay unforgettable.

The medieval village of Pals

The medieval village of Pals

You will be charmed by this small medieval village perched on a hill. Declared a site of historical interest in 1973, you can visit various fortified monuments such as the Torre de las Horas and the Museo Casa de Cultura Ca La Pruna. Wander through the picturesque streets and then sit on the terrace of a restaurant to sample the local rice dish. You can see the rice crops from the Josep Pla viewpoint, named after the writer whose favourite landscape this was. Throughout the year there are various festivals, the rice festival, the wine and canvas fair and the Nit d'Espelmes. Pals is located in a varied environment, so 3 kilometres away you will find a beach where you can enjoy different activities or simply sunbathe.

Figueres, in the footsteps of Dali

Figueres, in the footsteps of Dali

This city is a must for Dali fans, Figueres being his birthplace. It is therefore only natural that it should be home to the Dali Museum, located in an impressive building where the old theatre was situated. Recognisable by its red façade, it is a must-see. Another museum in the city is the Toy Museum, which exhibits various toys and objects, some of which were treasures of Dali. After your visits, take a stroll along the Rambla, the main street, and browse the shops and restaurants. There are many historical monuments and squares in the city, one of which is named after the artist. Before you leave, don't forget to try the Empordà wine, a protected designation of origin wine.

If you want to get closer to the coast, you can go to the small village of Cadaquès, whose landscape inspired the artist.

Begur and Aiguablava

Begur and Aiguablava

Begur is dominated by its medieval castle, situated in the hills from which you will enjoy the best view of the town. Its historic centre is home to a variety of historical monuments and architectural styles. Situated on the coast, the best known image of the town is certainly its rocky landscapes and cliffs. Its golden beaches and coves are among the most beautiful on the Costa Brava. Strolling along the coast, taking small paths, you will surely come across hidden coves. One of them leads to the most famous cove, Aiguablava. Its crystalline waters bordered by lush vegetation make it a magical place.

Tossa de Mar

Tossa de Mar

For history lovers, this ancient fishing village has many surprises in store. Occupied since ancient times, Tossa de Mar has survived the centuries and eras. Numerous monuments bear witness to its past, such as its walls and the Torre d'en Jonàs. Don't miss a visit to the Vila Vella, a castle that was used to protect the village from pirates. Another village bordering the sea, you can enjoy a walk on the beach and admire the beautiful scenery around you. Its turquoise waters and green cliffs will offer you a breathtaking spectacle. Finally, if you want to try a local speciality, try Simitomba, a dish made with fried fish and potatoes.
