Ciutadella is one of the two main cities on the island of Menorca, alongside Mahón. For a long time, it served as the island's capital and still retains much of its medieval Gothic architecture, which adorns many of its buildings.
In the early 18th century, Menorca was occupied by the British, leading to the island coming under English rule. It was during this period that the capital was transferred from Ciutadella to Mahón. The only notable exception to this shift was the bishop, who refused to relocate and remained in Ciutadella.
Today, although the city is no longer regarded as the political, economic, and cultural capital of the island, it remains an ecclesiastical centre, housing the renowned Cathedral of Ciutadella de Menorca.
