The Best Beaches in Andalusia

Andalusia enjoys a special status as the only European region with both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. It comes as no surprise then that its beaches draw huge number so tourists to the region every year.

From the rocky coves of Nerja to the powdery white sands of Tarifa, Villanovo takes you on a tour of some of the best beaches in Andalusia.

The Best Beaches in Andalusia - Andalusia

Playa de Bolonia, Tarifa

Where better to begin than with this gorgeous stretch of white sand located not far from Tarifa? This secluded paradise is surrounded by sand dunes and has no through-road, lending it a special feeling of remoteness.
Meanwhile, it’s backdrop of hills and even the presence of both wild cows and ancient Roman ruins only add to the feeling that you’ve escaped reality. Oh, and on a clear day (most are in these parts!) you can even see Africa.

The Best Beaches in Andalusia - Andalusia

Playa de El Ancón, Marbella

Located on the Milla de Oro, this wonderful wide, sandy beach can get a little overcrowded in the summer. However, if you catch it out of season then you can fully enjoy the serenity of its leafy setting and clear waters, all to yourself.

The Best Beaches in Andalusia - Andalusia

Playa de Los Muertos, Cabo de Gata, Almería

Another secluded haven, this time on the Mediterranean coast of Almeria is notable for its perfectly straight shoreline, separating the soft, pale sands from its crystalline waters. Part of its charm is drawn from its setting inside the Cabo de Gata natural park. As a result, there isn’t much by way of amenities here, so we would recommend packing a picnic.

The Best Beaches in Andalusia - Andalusia

Playa de Cañuelo, Costa del Sol, near Nerja

Those looking to escape the glitzier side of the Costa del Sol might want to pay a visit to this shingle beach not far from Nerja. Sitting inside a sheltered cove, within a natural park, this splendid little haven is a favourite among hippies, and offers excellent snorkelling. As with many of the more secluded beaches in the region, swimwear is optional!

The Best Beaches in Andalusia - Andalusia

Real de Zaragoza beach, Marbella

This long, thin beach situated not far from Marbella is another offering an alternative from the more touristy beaches located in the city. It is relatively unspoilt, and its calm waters are perfect for small children. The ideal destination to unwind with the family.

The Best Beaches in Andalusia - Andalusia

Matalascañas, Costa de la Luz, Huelva

The closest beach to Seville is an odd combination of a 5-kilometre sweep of untamed, dune-backed sands, which sit within the Doñana National Park, and a more built-up, modern beach resort. It also possesses an unusual sight in the shape of the top of a fallen tower that pokes out of the ocean – although no one can be sure how exactly it got there, it is rumoured to have been toppled by the earthquake that razed Lisbon in 1755.

The Best Beaches in Andalusia - Andalusia

Punta Paloma and Playa de Valdevaqueros, Tarifa

The virginal white sands of Punta Paloma which neighbour Playa de Bolonia, offer a welcome reward to those willing to travel a little for something different from the razzmatazz of Marbella. Its turquoise waters can be found at the bottom of a gentle slope, and the hypnotic views across the water of nearby Africa are to die for. Meanwhile, its somewhat exposed position makes it perfect for kitesurf and windsurfing enthusiasts.

The nearby cove of Playa de los Alemanes is equally charming and shouldn’t be missed.

Playa de Puerto Banús, Marbella

One of the beaches located closer to the town of Marbella, this pretty, city beach becomes a charming location once the season has ended and the sun loungers have been cleared. The waters are serene and the views of the hills across the bay are sumptuous. There is also an attractive marina and swanky bars within easy reach.

The Best Beaches in Andalusia - Andalusia

Playa de Burriana, Nerja, Malaga

This delightful beach set among rugged rocks and even including a waterfall, is a real treasure. Its white sands juxtapose beautifully with its pale blue waters, and nearby greenery while the local amenities are plentiful without it feeling over developed. A thoroughly pleasant day at the beach awaits.
