Las Fallas Festival, Spain

Las Fallas Festival, Spain

As well as being Spain’s 3rd largest city, Valencia possesses a unique and futuristic culture which is fascinating, especially around the time of Las Fallas festival in March, a combination of fire, humour and art. It originates from carpenters in the past who used to set the pieces of wood which were used to hold their lights up in winter, on fire. This was done as a celebration of the arrival of Spring. For 3 days every year, streets are filled with people dancing and singing, with parades and impressive firecracker displays named ‘ mascleta’. These occur throughout the day in various parts of the city but the main firecracker show always happens on Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the main square of the city, at 2 pm every day. The tradition behind Las Fallas is to create sculptures with the intention to burn them after.

Spring Equinox, Mexico

Spring Equinox, Mexico

This festival, which takes place in Teotihuacan, occurs on the 20th of March and represents rebirth and and renewal, as a new season begins. The Spring Equinox means that the sun is directly aligned over the Equator. Ancient civilisations in Mexico were focused on the movement of celestial bodies, therefore the Spring Equinox is a time to commemorate these civilisations and to align their energies with that of the sun. To mark this new beginning, people climb up the Pyramid of the Sun, just outside of Mexico City to soak up the energy from the sun’s rays. Rites are also performed at the bottom of temples by medicine practitioners as a respect for the Mesoamerican heritage.
