Islands throughout the world are usually home to the most incredible beaches as well as fauna and flora. These little bubbles in the middle of the sea or the ocean are often a great day excursion for those wishing to discover more about the surroundings of their host destination. Whether it's a tropical destination such as Costa Rica or a haven of peace such as Brazil, Villanovo has travelled the world to introduce you to what we think are 5 of the most beautiful islands out there.

These beautiful 500 hectare islands in the shape of a turtle have been voted the most beautiful islands of Costa Rica. Located in the Gulf of Nicoya, 17 kilometres from the lovely town of Puntarenas opposite the magnificent Curu National Wildlife refuge.  As they are part of a biological private reserve, it is not possible to stay on the islands overnight but they make a great day excursion with your loved ones by yourself. Children will be delighted to hear that on the boat to the islands, there is the possibility to see dolphins. Travellers will appreciate the calm of the islands which is ideal to relax far away from the crowds, to read one’s favourite book under coconut trees. To discover the little creeks of the islands, one can take part in other activities such as kayaking or paddling!

Cat Ba Island, Vietnam

The island of Cat Ba is the largest of the 367 islands which form the Cat Ba archipelago which is itself located in Halong Bay in northern Vietnam. This beautiful and wild island is full of secret bays and verdant vegetation waiting to be explored. It is also home to a 280 km2 national park which has been a Unesco World Biosphere Reserve since 1994. As well as hiking, bathing in emerald waters and relaxing, Cat Ba island includes fascinating sightseeing points to visit. These include Cannon Fort, a relic from the French colonial period. The latter was built in 1942 and was used as an observation spot by the military. Viet Hai is a charming fishing village which is home to 400 habitants.  The floating village of Cai Bo is another unavoidable spot of the island. Accessible from Ben Beo harbour Cai Bo includes over 300 floating houses run by fishing families. Travellers will be charmed by the simplicity of the locals and their lifestyle, the village only installed electricity in 2010!

Located just off the Peninsula of Yucatan in Mexico, this splendid island which is part of the Yum Balam Nature Reserve is renowned for its crystal clear water, white sandy beaches and relaxed lifestyle which create its unique beauty and charm. Travellers from all over the world are attracted to Holbox as its lucid and warm waters include the largest fish in the sea, the shale shark which can be up to 12 metres long and weigh up to 20 tonnes. The most optimal time to be able to see it is between May and September as that is breeding season. Step off the boat and let yourself be enchanted by the natural beauty you are surrounded with. As it is a car-free island, the air is pure and pollution-free, ideal to fully relax and recharge your batteries. Activities to take part in on Ilha de Tinharé include hiking to a 17th century forest, snorkeling in the lucid and warm sea and last but not least, sipping on a freshly made caipirinhas while listening to the sound of the waves crashing into the beach.
