Follow the steps of Cézanne

Many visitors visit Aix En Provence to learn more about Cézanne's artistic legacy.  For those art buffs, you're in for a treat here. This city holds some of the best art museums in Provence, not to mention the artistic heritage of one and only Cézanne-- one of the most iconic post-impressionist artists of the 20th-century. Aix En Provence was his birthplace and where and he lived his whole life until his death. Here, he painted countless times, creating magnificent masterpieces depicting the beautiful bucolic landscapes Aix En Provence offers. He was deeply in love with his hometown. You can follow his footsteps by visiting Aix En Provence's countryside, which he endlessly painted, the Statue of Cezanne, The Pénitent Blancs Chapel, the Café des Deux Garçons, the Church of Madeleine, the Fountain de la rue des Bagniers, as well as the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral. 

Granet Museum

After following Cezanne's footsteps, you can then peruse and admire his extraordinary artworks at the Granet Museum. Considered one of the best museums of fine art, here you'll have access to myriad canvases by Aix En Provence's dearest iconic artist. But you can also admire various works of arts of French painting from the 14th to the 20th centuries, not to mention archaeological pieces and sculptures of great value. It features more than 300 paintings by Rembrandt, Cézanne, Renoir, Monet, Degas, Picasso and Van Gogh. This museum is dynamic and always proposes new exhibitions every other season. The heart of Aix En Provence and one of its most emblematic streets is the Cours Mirebeau. Once a horse-carriage crossing, this large boulevard divides the old town from the new one and boasts beautiful lush trees and a variety of elegant fountains that provide shade and coolness during the hot summer months. Its most famous one is the Fountain of the Place de la Rotonde, featuring three statues that symbolise justice, agriculture and fine arts. This boulevard is a photograph-worthy location that will make your Instagram surge in likes. On one side of the street, there is a succession of elegant houses with aristocratic façades- on the other side, there are plenty of shops and cafés with lovely terraces with a cheery atmosphere.

Visit the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral

Aix-En-Provence was once an ancient Roman city. The Cathedral of Saint-Sauveur is its most emblematic religious building, constructed on the site of the temple of Apollo between the 5th and 17th-century. Discover this beautiful cathedral that boasts myriad architectural and artistic styles through the centuries. What most stands out are its contrasting features of Romanesque and Gothic style. After exploring this beautiful landmark, head over to one of the area's restaurants and taste some of the exquisite local cuisines.
