What does a mas mean in Provence?

What does a mas mean in Provence?

Eager to experience the beauty and joie de vivre of the south of France in an authentic way? Rent a mas (farmhouse) in Provence for a taste of local life of then and now. These picturesque homes are nestled in the heart of the countryside, considered to be one of the most beautiful in France. A Provençal mas blends rustic charm with modern comforts, for a truly memorable stay in a unique setting.

The history of a le mas de Provence

Farmers were the original occupants of the Provençal mas. These traditional kinds of houses were more modest versions of bastides, expensive homes reserved for a wealthy, bourgeois family. During the 20th century, mas were transformed into holiday homes. In recent years, Villanovo has renovated them into luxury villas while preserving their traditional elements. Made with inexpensive local materials, the buildings are in the form of a long rectangle. The interiors have exposed beams, cool tile floors, and thick, white-washed stone walls to insulate you from summer heat. A central stairway leads to an upper floor (which was once used for the raising of silkworms) that is often on the north side of the house, while the mas face the south for protection from the mistral wind. The windows are narrow to protect from the cold of winter and the heat of summer.

Choosing the right Provençal mas

Choosing the right Provençal mas

There are a few things to consider when deciding on which farmhouse in Provence to rent. Firstly, location. Do you want be close to a city or town like Avignon or Aix-en-Provence? Near the string chic, hilltop villages of the Luberon like Gordes, one of the most beautiful in France?  You'll want to consider the size of a mas as well. The larger the mas, the more ensuite bedrooms and privacy for your group and room to spread out. A petit mas is ideal for an intimate getaway with your family. Every mas has its own amenities to suit your needs. Think open kitchens for cooking together, verdant patios with outdoor grills for alfresco meals, and swimming pools for lazily lounging on sunny days.
