The Hidden Treasures of Yucatan

The Yucatan Cenotes

These wonders of nature that offer you unique bathing experiences are huge holes of turquoise water lost in the jungle. Meaning sacred well, the cenotes represent for the Maya mouths enabling them to communicate with the gods. These natural freshwater pools are accessed via a small staircase along the walls. Many cenotes are freely accessible while some are accessible in exchange for a few euros, which is the case of the Oxman cenote. The Oxman Cenote, located a few kilometres from Valladolid, is particularly recommended for its breathtaking charm. Indeed, in addition to its translucent water, many wild lianas come out of the water for an exceptional experience.

Isla Blanca beach

Just a few kilometers from Cancun, Isla Blanca beach offers a true haven of peace away from the crowds of Cancun beaches like Playa del Carmen. Here you will discover a large white sand beach almost deserted except for Roberto of course. A local with a passion for cooking and owner of magnificent little colourful huts on the beach. So you will have all the time you need to relax under the palm trees and enjoy delicious grilled fish whilst lying on the fine sand.

The Mayan ruins of Calakmul

Visiting the famous site of Chichen Itza is a must during your trip to Mexico. However, we also (and especially!) advise you to visit the Mayan city of Calakmul, which is much less touristy. Located in the south of the peninsula and close to the Guatemalan border, you will discover splendid pyramids in the middle of the luxuriant vegetation of the jungle which accomodates very many monkeys. With family, friends or on your own, this is an unmissable cultural visit!

The Hidden Treasures of Yucatan

The Sian Ka'an reservation

Nature lovers will once again find their happiness during an excursion to the Sian Ka 'an nature reserve. On the south coast and 3 hours drive from Tulum to the small village of Punta Allen, you can admire a unique flora and fauna that is still well preserved and protected. If you wish to admire local animal species it is the ideal visit as many pelicans, giant lizards, sea turtles and dolphins reside there.

The small town of Campeche

This small and colourful Mexican town, sheltered from crowds and mass tourism, is a must see. Its cultural heritage is intact and one meets there many warm-hearted inhabitants. The charm of the small houses and the paved streets is indisputable. There are several traditional shops but also small restaurants offering typical cuisine at ridiculously low prices compared to what you will find in Cancun or Tulum. Moreover, Campeche has preserved several vestiges and has the superb Mayan museum which will explain you all the history of this civilization.

The Temazcal ceremony

A true highlight of your immersion in the local culture, the shamanic rite of the "hot stone temple" is a sensational experience that you won't soon forget! This ceremony, which consists of purifying the body and spirit, is deeply rooted in the traditions of the locals and consists of a process of sweating. The participants are seated in an arc where the hot stones are placed in the centre. A very special smell is diffused in the air, that of copal, a vegetable resin. The participants are plunged into darkness where only a few candles bring some light into the room. The room is very hot and the ritual chants follow one another while we lose liters of sweat. Once purified, it will be advisable to take a cold shower and to hydrate well.
