Considered among the most significant artists of the second half of the 20th century, the American Cy Twombly is the subject of an extraordinary exhibition organised by the Majorelle Foundation, in collaboration with the Fondazione Nicola Del Roscio and the Cy Twombly Foundation.
Although many of his works - masses of colours, crayon-like strokes and rough writing - may seem disconcerting to the casual observer (and they have been the subject of much criticism throughout his career), they are the strange fruit of a profound reflection upon historical figures and events, as in the case of his paintings devoted to the Iliad. For some, these works may amount to little more than scribbles, but to dismiss them as simple "child's play" or a yearning for naivety would be to miss out on the abstract expressionist's representation of his intellectual thought not so much through portrayal as through figuratove exploration.
The exhibition, which will be held at the Yves-Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakech from 4 March to 3 July, focuses on the young artist's trip to Morocco between 1952 and 1953. Known for his passion for the world of classical antiquity, Cy Twombly also developed a real fascination for the pictorial traditions of the Amazigh [Berber] tribes of Morocco, whose codes he appropriated, integrating them into his creative process.
From 4 March, fans of the famous French couturier will be able to enjoy a large series of preparatory drawings made by the artist over the course of his career, which will be exhibited in the Yves Saint-Laurent Museum in Marrakech. Gaël Mamine, head of collections and textiles at the Pierre Bergé Foundation, and Olivier Saillard, curator of the event "Yves Saint Laurent 1971: la collection du scandale", first organised in Paris in 2015, are behind this retrospective, which will be on display until the end of January 2024.
Preserved at the Pierre Bergé Foundation in Paris, the various drawings and sketches of the man of fashion will therefore make the journey to his beloved city, a great source of inspiration. Among these creations on paper, visitors will be able to view numerous sketches made in the Red City, near the Villa Majorelle, which he so cherished and which, since his death, has become one of the city's most visited sites. These illustrations, the starting point of the author's creative process, transformed into true fashion masterpieces in the Parisian workshops, provide an exceptional insight into the essence of Yves Saint-Laurent's work. Velvet, muslin, tweed or silk... let the pencil strokes of the French genius carry you away into his elegant creative world!
