Although Sri Lankans are very tolerant of visitor awkwardness, it is advisable to know the local customs and forms of politeness. So here is a list of small brands of respect and behaviours to avoid so that your stay in your sublime luxury villa in Sri Lanka happens in the best conditions.
> Women should not touch monks, and men should not touch nuns.
> Correct dress is required to visit temples and religious buildings. No short clothes and shoulders covered. Include in your bag a headscarf to cover your head as some mosques require it, out of respect for religion.
> In Buddhist temples one should not take pictures in back to Buddha because it can be perceived as an offense (no selfie!). In general, it is rather bad to see a picture with Buddha.
> If you want to greet someone like a true Sri Lankan, you have to clasp your hands in front of your chest.
> It is forbidden to get a tattoo or to buy a large decorative piece with the image of Buddha. If you already own a Buddha tattoo think about covering it up as you could end up at the police station or even be expelled from the country.
> Do not smoke in the streets because it is forbidden
> Gestures of affection too obvious are to be avoided because the Sri Lankans are very modest.
